1. First Step: Planning and Designing a Home Cinema Room

1.1. Defining the Requirements and Preparing the Project

Every Home Cinema room project begins with an essential phase: defining the client's needs and expectations. For Julien, the brief was clear — he wanted a home cinema room that was both high-performing and visually refined, capable of recreating the immersive experience of a professional cinema in the comfort of his own home.

Julien had a unique space at his disposal: a large barn with an existing structural framework. This opened up many possibilities, but also presented challenges in terms of acoustic isolation and interior layout.

Designing the room required in-depth thinking about the layout of every element: the screen, the speakers, the furniture, and of course the acoustic treatment. The goal was to create an immersive environment in which every detail is optimised for a high-quality audio and visual experience.

We decided to divide the space into two zones: a projection area and a technical area. The projection area is the heart of the room, featuring a 4-metre-wide screen and a high-performance projector. The technical area houses the electronic equipment and acoustic treatment elements.

1.3. Equipment Selection: Performance First

Choosing the right equipment is critical to any Home Cinema installation. For this project, we selected high-quality products that guarantee optimal sound and image reproduction:

• Video: the Sony GTZ 380 projector, capable of projecting 4K HDR images at 10,000 lumens, was chosen for its power and image precision.
• Audio: a 15-speaker system, including front, surround, and Atmos speakers, all precisely angled for an immersive sound experience. Everything is connected to the Trinnov Altitude16 processor.
• Acoustic Treatment: bespoke acoustic panels, double-layer acoustic plasterboard partitions for maximum isolation, and high-transparency acoustic fabric for perfect sound reproduction.

2. The Build: Transformations and Technical Challenges

 

2.1. Acoustic Isolation: An Absolute Priority

One of the major challenges in building a Home Cinema room is acoustic isolation. It is essential to keep sound contained within the room to prevent disturbances outside and to ensure optimal sound quality inside.

For this project, we opted for a double-layer acoustic plasterboard partition separated by an air gap. This system not only significantly reduces external noise intrusion, but also prevents internal resonances and vibrations. The result is a fully isolated room — you cannot even hear tools running in the house under construction around it.

2.2. Acoustic Treatment: The Art of Controlling Sound

Acoustic treatment is just as important as isolation. It involves controlling sound reverberation within the room to ensure clear, precise listening. We used several types of acoustic panels, strategically positioned on the walls and ceiling:

• Absorber panels: to reduce reverberation and unwanted echoes.
• Diffuser panels: to distribute sound evenly and eliminate acoustic hot spots.
• Stretched fabric: providing acoustic transparency while concealing the technical elements.

2.3. Structural Challenges: Adapting to the Room's Architecture

Julien's barn, with its unconventional angles and non-standard dimensions, presented particular challenges. Unlike a standard rectangular room, every panel and every speaker had to be adjusted with millimetre precision to integrate perfectly into the space.

The work was especially meticulous around the built-in speakers, some of which had trapezoidal shapes, requiring custom cuts in the panels for a perfect fit.

2.4. The Finishing: A Craftsman's Touch

The attention to detail in the finishing work made all the difference on this project. Every element — from the LED strips integrated into the stair nosings to the smallest trim — was designed to blend aesthetics with functionality. The acoustic fabric used to cover the walls is not only acoustically high-performing, but was also chosen for its texture and colour, creating a warm and sophisticated atmosphere.

3. Equipment Installation: Technology in Service of Immersion

 

3.1. A High-End Projector for Breathtaking Images

The projector of choice was the Sony GTZ 380, a flagship model that delivers exceptional performance. With 10,000 lumens of brightness, it ensures perfect image clarity even in the darkest scenes. The projector can display images in 4K and even 8K, providing unmatched precision and sharpness.

3.2. A Powerhouse Audio System for an Immersive Cinematic Experience

The audio system was designed to envelop viewers in a sound bubble. Comprising 15 speakers — including front, surround, and Atmos units — the precise positioning of each speaker, combined with expert calibration, faithfully reproduces sound effects exactly as they were designed in professional film studios.

 

3.3. Calibration: Precision Work for Perfect Picture and Sound

The audio system calibration was carried out by Alexandre Garcia from Trinnov. Each speaker was fine-tuned to ensure a perfect balance between bass, mids, and highs. The result is an immersive sound experience in which every detail is perceptible — from the subtlest dialogue to the most thunderous explosion.

For the image, Julien Berry came in to fine-tune the Sony projector's output to perfection. Every pixel was calibrated for an absolutely exceptional result — a true deep dive into the world of film.
